Law clerk, Auckland - University of Otago
“A summer clerkship at Chapman Tripp is a really great taster of what you’re going to experience when you come into a commercial law firm as a graduate.”
I got to do real hands-on work, including receiving one-on-one supervision from partners - which I don’t think I was expecting coming into a commercial law firm.
I clerked in the property and corporate (M&A) teams across the 2017/18 summer and will be joining the property team as a law clerk this year. Property really appealed to me because you have the opportunity to work with a wide range of clients on a lot of different matters. You also regularly get to see transactions through from beginning to end, which is really satisfying.
The highlight of my time at Chapman Tripp so far has most definitely been the people, as clichéd as that sounds. The culture is both supportive and collaborative. Whether you’ve made a mistake or need to ask a question, everyone at the firm is really approachable.
“Chapman Tripp just seem to have a knack for hiring great, fun, sociable, diverse people!”
My advice to anyone thinking about applying to Chapman Tripp is to make sure you get ahead of the game. It’s helpful to ensure you understand each firm’s recruitment process before applying – for example, Chapman Tripp asks you to answer two application questions rather than writing a cover letter. Other than that, just be yourself and back yourself!
